History of Wirehaired Pointing Griffon

The Early origins of the Wirehaird Pointing Griffon has been lost in history, it has been the theory of early scholars that they were use by the Romans as companions but there is no record to prove this theory. In more recent history the origins of the Griffon has been well documented. So how did we get the Wirehaired Griffon that we know today? Edward Karel Korthals “lived from 1851 to 1896” was a sportsman and hunter and develop a strain of Wiredhaired Griffon that are breed with excellent hunting abilities. He narrowed his breeding stock down to eight dogs that are responsible for the foundation of Wirehaired Griffon. In 1887 the first Griffon came to the USA and in that same year they where registered by the AKC as a Russian Setter.

Appearance of Wirehaired Pointing Griffons

The wirehaired Pointing Griffon is a medium size dog. Height range from 20-24 inches and can weigh 50-60 lbs. There coat is usually gray with brown markings. Other colors might include: chestnut brown, white and brown, roan, and white and orange. Their ears are flat and lie close to their head, their eyes are either yellow or brown, and it’s noise must be brown. The average life of a Griffon is 10-12 yrs.
